What Can I Do If My Child Is Missing a [Permanent] Tooth?
When your child is missing a permanent tooth, it can affect the way that they feel about themselves. Sure, if it’s a baby tooth, it’s not a huge deal and can be dealt with quite easily. However, a lot of kids lose their permanent teeth for a variety of reasons. As their parent, you want to make sure that they look their best at all times and do not deal with the self-esteem issues that you might have had growing up. The best way for you to accomplish that is to speak with your local orthodontist. There you can see what they are going to be able to do for both you and your child to improve their smile for the future.
Why Your Child Might Be Missing a Permanent Tooth
There are several reasons for why your child might be missing teeth. Many kids play sports and do not properly protect their teeth. They might lose a tooth simply because they were doing something and got hit in the mouth. Another reason kids and teens lose their teeth is because they were not taking care of them.
The tooth might have had to be removed because of it rotting and causing infection issues. Likewise, the tooth might have too large of a filling and now needs to be removed because it is becoming a problem for your child or teen. No matter the reason for your child losing a permanent tooth, it is important to realize that there are a variety of options available to help them in terms of feeling good about themselves and getting their smile back.
Visiting Your Orthodontic Professional
If you feel it is time to improve your child’s or teen’s smile, it’s important that you visit your local orthodontist to see what they can do for you. The orthodontist is a professional who specializes in correcting the look of smiles.
Because of this, you can feel confident knowing that you are choosing a professional who is going to be able to help your child feel great about themselves. Firstly, you’ll need to make an appointment with your professional. Have them take a look at your child to ensure that this is the right option for them.
Implants
Your orthodontic professional might have to send your child or teen out to the local surgeon for implants. Implants for the teeth are ideal because they totally replace a missing tooth. This can improve a smile that would otherwise not have the right options when it comes to orthodontic work. Going for surgery might seem like a relatively big deal, but orthodontic surgery is not that big of a deal and your child can go home the same day it is done.
It is recommended that you talk about this option to your orthodontic professional so that you know exactly what to expect when you make the decision to bring your child to get their smile improved.
Braces
Braces can help because they will naturally straighten the teeth. This might help to fill in the gap where your child is missing their teeth. Your orthodontic professional is there to help with this specific task and can tell you if your child is a viable candidate for having this done.
If you do not know if this option is right for you, it is time to speak with a professional to see if they are going to be able to do this for your child and what to expect out of it in the process.
Orthodontic Work
Other types of orthodontic work can help your child to fill in the gaps where they are missing teeth. Obviously, this is something that only an orthodontic professional can advise you on. It is important to make a trip to the local office to begin the process of changing your child’s smile for the better. This type of work might include the use of retainers, spreaders and other options.
Understanding What Needs to Be Done
To begin this option, you’ll need to visit an orthodontic office near your home. You will want to speak with a professional to find out what they are going to be able to do for your child or teen and what you need to expect as a parent.
This not only includes the treatment plan. Also the amount it is going to cost to have the work done. If need be, most orthodontic offices offer financing plans. This can make it easy for you to afford the work that needs to get done.
What to Expect
Here are some of the things you should expect when bringing your child to an orthodontic office for missing teeth:
- A full examination of the teeth with x-rays.
- Consultation of what needs to be done.
- Treatment plan scheduled with appointments.
- Possible referral to an orthodontic surgeon.
