Orthodontic Fact #6
The first braces were a piece of flat metal in 1720. This was connected to the patient’s teeth by using several pieces of thread.
An orthodontist could best be described as a “smile” doctor. Orthodontics is a specialty field that is dedicated to making and keeping your teeth straight. Dr. Joel Gluck is an orthodontist in Nashville who can help adults and children obtain straight teeth through the use of dental braces.
The Changing Philosophy of Orthodontics
The history of orthodontics as it is known today dates back to the 1700s. Modern orthodontists are highly-educated specialists who use their training to manage the teeth and facial development of their patients. Much of the history of orthodontics was guided by the philosophy that the straightening of teeth is primarily a cosmetic issue. However, the importance of dental braces Nashville extends beyond the appearance of the teeth and into the area of a person’s general health. These are among the benefits of having straight teeth:
• Confidence and personal satisfaction
• The improved performance of the teeth
• The reduced risk of dental problems
Teeth that are crooked or crowded together are more difficult to clean, which increases the risk of decay, and they also breed gum disease. Additionally, teeth with biting flaws do not wear properly, which can lead to headaches and neck pains. There is even evidence that misaligned teeth can lead to heart trouble. Braces may be the answer to these health issues.
How Braces Function
Braces use subtle pressure to move misaligned teeth back into a more favorable position. Traditional steel braces can be placed on a person’s teeth in about an hour and will require periodic “maintenance” checks. Braces for kids and teens can be useful in preventing dental problems later in life. However, adults who were not born with perfect teeth can also benefit from braces. Invisalign retainers are a very popular choice for both adults and teens. These clear retainers are easy to wear and can be removed for eating or brushing.
