Orthodontic Fact #1
Orthodontic Fact #1 – Almost 25% of patients that wore braces had to get them again after treatment because they failed to wear retainers as they were advised
Many have asked an orthodontist if it is possible for their child to have braces multiple times in their life. They are surprised to learn that in some cases, as a result of extreme dental issues, or as a result of failure to wear retainers, up to 25 percent of patients who wear braces need to have them a second time.
Obviously, this is unwelcome news for parents. Parents are extremely concerned that their children take all of the necessary precautions in order to avoid needing to have braces applied for the second time. In most cases, this requires that parents diligently monitor whether or not their children use their retainers.
Orthodontists in Nashville has seen many cases of teenagers getting braces when they are 13 years old, having those braces removed when they are 15, and because of failing to use their retainer, needing to have braces reapplied once again once they reach 18. In the early history of orthodontics, braces were applied and some patients were told that they only needed to use their retainer for one year, or they may not have been given a retainer at all. Unfortunately, in short order, these individuals are back in the orthodontic’s office because their teeth have become misaligned once again.
Braces for kids and teens are just the first step in providing a young individual with a straight, attractive smile. In order to maintain that happy smile, after receiving the dental braces orthodontist applies, it is up to the young individual to help keep their teeth straight by using their retainer. In most cases, a person who has received the dental braces orthodontist applies will need to use a retainer for the rest of their life.
