Franklin

Firstly, Franklin is a city just south of Nashville, in Tennessee. A key site of the American Civil War, it’s home to 2 properties exploring the 1864 Battle of Franklin: Carter House and Carnton Plantation, which includes the McGavock Confederate Cemetery. The 1858 Lotz House contains a large collection of 19th-century furniture. Downtown’s Main Street is lined with galleries, antique shops and restored Victorian buildings.
Harvey McLemore, a former slave owned by Confederate officer W. S. McLemore, who was later a lawyer and judge in Williamson County. In 1880, Harvey McLemore bought a piece of property from his former owner in a neighbourhood called “Hard Bargain.”
Harvey’s house still stands at 446 11th Avenue North and was occupied by his descendants for 117 years before it was acquired by the African American Heritage Society and the Heritage Society of Franklin and Williamson County in 1997. It is the oldest remaining African American owned home in Franklin.
