Orthodontic Fact #12
A brace is one type of dental appliance that an orthodontist can use depending on the patient’s needs. Other appliances may be suggested to treat a specific jaw or mouth deformity
According to archaeologists, ancient people wanted straight teeth too. Remains of teeth have been discovered that have brutish metal wire wrapped around them. The ancient Greeks even utilized catgut to help straighten their teeth, whereas now we use orthodontic wire. Greeks in the Golden Age actually used crude retainers to space their teeth and prevent dental collapse. Furthermore, Egyptians had the bright idea to wrap teeth in gold wire, a precursor to the gold teeth we see today!
The History of Orthodontics
No real significant advances in orthodontics occurred until the 1700s. Many people were experimenting with ways to fix crooked teeth, decayed teeth, overbites, under-bites, and the like. While George Washington had some wooden teeth, other important breakthrough was called the Bandeau, a horseshoe shaped appliance that would help expand the arch. Furthermore, braces were invented over a century ago, but teeth were wrapped in actual gold and silver. Advancements in braces continue today, with the latest advancement being appliances such as Invisalign, which is a clear retainer used to correct crooked teeth without having the commitment of braces. The history of orthodontics is a fascinating one, and we can be glad that orthodontics has come such a long way!
